Microsoft Exchange Server is a mail and calendaring server created by Microsoft and supported only by Windows Server operating systems. While spam and malware are blocked by Microsoft Exchange and a Secure Email Gateway (SEG), plain text emails and custom attacks are not. Over 90% of successful intrusions are caused by impersonation attempts that target this security flaw.

Despite the fact that many firms are migrating to the cloud via Microsoft 365 or Exchange Online, a significant number of organizations still run their own on-premises Microsoft Exchange Server. Unfortunately, Microsoft Exchange does not support DKIM and DMARC although there are third-party solutions available.

You can either use a virtual appliance to deploy a solution that handles email filtering and authentication or you can install missing functionality-adding plugins directly on the Microsoft Exchange Server. DMARC (Domain-Based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance) is an email authentication standard or protocol that determines whether an email is authentic or not. It relies on SPF and DKIM, two other protocols, to decide the authentication status of an email. It provides visibility of the sources sending emails from an organization’s domain, ensures better email deliverability, and, most importantly, provides security against domain spoofing, phishing, and impersonation attacks.
